Our Designers
As a 3D printer, it is important to have designs that you can use to produce goods, in turn to sell to our customer base. There are many ways to get designs including; using a CAD program to create your own designs, using a model to scan a 3D image of and then make into a 3D model, and lastly to partner with a designer that has a library of 3D designs that you can sell prints of. The last example is what Bohnafide LLC does.
Where to find designers?
We print designs both that are licensed by the designer as Creative Commons/ Attribution and also prints from designers that have the printer purchase their designs, either through a monthly Paetron or through a yearly license. This does not allow Bohnafide LLC to sell the 3D designs, but only the 3D printed goods. I will first talk about the creative commons/attribution licensing then I will go into how we partnered with other designers through Paetron.
For a library of 3D designs, we use both thingiverse.com and cults3d.com. You use the library to search for a design you like and check under the licensing section on the page. For an example I have pictured the Shrine Dice Tower we print, designed by Frank86. When the designer placed the design on thingiverse, they licensed their design as Creative Commons, which means
You are free to:
- Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
- Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
- for any purpose, even commercially.
This design is also under the Attribution license, which means
You are free to:
- Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
- Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
- for any purpose, even commercially.
- The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.
Under the following terms:
- Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
- No additional restrictions — You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
When attributing our designers commercially we make tags stating the designers information with our goods. See tag below for an example. When listing the items for sale on our online store, we place in the description “Designed by …” to make sure the designer is attributed.
Now to designers that we have partnered with through Paetron or through other means to be able to sell 3D prints of their designs (this does not give us the ability to sell their 3D design, only the 3D printed good). You can find many designers through Cults3D by finding a print you like, then looking at the designer description. Designers will put their information there if you can sell commercially or if you cannot. They also place information on how you can become a commercial seller of theirs. For example, here is an excerpt from Flexi Print-in-Place Phoenix by Flexi Factory:
“ALL Flexi Factory designs are protected by Copyright Law. When you purchase, you do NOT have the right to sell any digital file or printed model
of my designs without my explicit written consent.
To legally sell them, you may obtain my permission through this link: https://www.patreon.com/FlexiFactory
Please help support the creative work of each 3D artist and NEVER share or sell a digital file.”
Here the designer states clearly that you must become a Paetron to sell any prints of their designs commercially. You can then contact them through their Paetron and select a membership level. Pictured below is, for example only, Flexi Factory’s membership.
Then to contribute our 3D printed goods, we display our seals of sale that we received from our designers both at our stands, and online. Below is our seals we have through Cinderwing3D and Fate’s End (Fur Haven Collection).
There are many more ways to find 3D designs and I only have listed the ways we have partnered with great designers for our 3D printed goods. Best of luck to amazing designers and printers alike!
